Yom Teruah 2026: The Feast of Trumpets Explained

The feast is called Yom Teruah — the Day of Trumpet Blasts. It is one of the appointed times of YAHUAH, and it is the only feast that falls on the first day of a month, at the new moon. Leviticus commands a holy assembly, a memorial of blowing, and rest from servile work. No other feast sounds like this one.

Most believers have heard of Passover. Most have heard of Tabernacles. Yom Teruah is the feast nobody talks about — yet it may point most directly at what is coming.

What Does "Yom Teruah" Actually Mean?

In Strong's Concordance, teruah is H8643. It comes from the root ru'a (H7321) — to raise a shout, to sound an alarm. The word appears 36 times in the Old Testament, and translators render it as shout, shouting, alarm, blowing of the trumpets, joy, jubilee, loud noise, and rejoicing.

That range of meanings is the point. Teruah is not gentle background music. It is a sound that demands a response. It is the battle-cry that knocked down Jericho (Joshua 6:5, 20). It is the alarm that warned of invasion (Zephaniah 1:16). It is the joyful shout of worship when the ark came up to Jerusalem (2 Samuel 6:15). One word holds all of these — because in scripture, the trumpet blast is YAHUAH getting heaven's attention and earth's.

Notice what the Bible does not call it: "Feast of Trumpets" is a traditional English title. The scriptural name is simply Yom Teruah — the Day of Blowing. The command in Leviticus 23:24 is zikhron teruah — a memorial of blowing. No event is attached. The sounding is the memorial — because the full meaning belongs to the future.

The Command: What YAHUAH Actually Required

Leviticus 23:23–25:

"Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, In the seventh month, in the first day of the month, shall ye have a sabbath, a memorial of blowing of trumpets, an holy convocation. Ye shall do no servile work therein: but ye shall offer an offering made by fire unto YAHUAH."

Numbers 29:1 adds: "it is a day of blowing the trumpets unto you."

2. It is a memorial of blowing. No historical event is attached to it in the text. The sounding is the memorial.
3. No reason is given for why. Passover remembers the Exodus. Tabernacles remembers the wilderness. Yom Teruah remembers a blast — because the full meaning belongs to the future.

That is exactly how prophecy works in YAHUAH's calendar. The spring feasts were rehearsals for the Messiah's first coming: Passover fulfilled in His death, Unleavened Bread in His burial, Firstfruits in His resurrection, Shavuot in the outpouring of the Spirit. The fall feasts are the rehearsals for what comes next — and Yom Teruah is the first alarm of that season.

Three Things the Trumpet Meant in Scripture

Numbers 10 lays out the trumpet's job description. YAHUAH commanded silver trumpets for specific purposes, and every one of them shows up in this feast.

1. The alarm of war

"And if ye go to war in your land against the enemy that oppresseth you, then ye shall blow an alarm with the trumpets; and ye shall be remembered before YAHUAH your God, and ye shall be saved from your enemies." — Numbers 10:9

The trumpet was the ancient early-warning system. Joel 2:1: "Blow ye the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm in my holy mountain: let all the inhabitants of the land tremble: for the day of YAHUAH cometh, for it is nigh at hand." Zephaniah calls the Day of YAHUAH "a day of the trumpet and alarm" (Zephaniah 1:16).

Yom Teruah is the feast of the alarm. It asks one question: when the warning sounds, will you be ready?

2. The call to assemble

"Also in the day of your gladness, and in your solemn days, and in the beginnings of your months, ye shall blow with the trumpets." — Numbers 10:10

The trumpet gathered the congregation and broke the camp. It was also blown at every new moon — and Yom Teruah is the one new moon that is also a holy convocation. The blast says: come together. Stop your work. Assemble before YAHUAH.

This is why the Messiah's return is described the same way: "And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds" (Matthew 24:31).

3. The shout of joy

"Blessed is the people that know the joyful sound." — Psalm 89:15

That "joyful sound" is teruah. The same word used for the alarm of war is used for the shout of joy — because for YAHUAH's people, the alarm is good news. Judgment on the wicked is deliverance for the remnant. The trumpet that terrifies the enemies of YAHUAH is the trumpet that gathers His own.

One blast. Two audiences. The difference is which side of the covenant you stand on.

The Prophetic Pattern: The Fall Feasts and the Last Trumpet

Here is where it gets serious.

The New Testament describes the resurrection and the return of YAHUSHA in trumpet language:

• 1 Corinthians 15:52 — "In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed."

• 1 Thessalonians 4:16 — "For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first."

• Revelation 11:15 — "And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ."

• Isaiah 27:13 — "And it shall come to pass in that day, that the great trumpet shall be blown, and they shall come which were ready to perish in the land of Assyria, and the outcasts in the land of Egypt, and shall worship YAHUAH in the holy mount at Jerusalem."

The pattern is impossible to miss: at the last trumpet, the dead rise. At the trump of God, the King descends. At the great trumpet, the exiles of Israel are regathered. The fall feasts tell this story in order — Trumpets (the alarm and gathering), Atonement (national repentance), Tabernacles (YAHUAH dwelling with His people).

A note of honesty the remnant needs: scripture nowhere says the Messiah must return on Yom Teruah. Many teachers point out that this feast is the only one set at the new moon, when the exact day depended on witnesses sighting the moon's sliver — so "you do not know the day or the hour" (Matthew 24:36) fits its calendar reality like a glove. But that is a pattern, not a date. Watch, prepare, rehearse — that is the command. Predicting is not.

What This Means for the Remnant Today

Yom Teruah 2026 begins at sunset on September 11 — a date America already knows as a day of alarm. That is not a coincidence worth building doctrine on, but it is a sobering reminder: nations can be shaken in a morning, and the trumpet does not ask permission.

• Learn the sound. Read Leviticus 23 and Numbers 29 for yourself. Know what YAHUAH commanded, not what tradition added.

• Treat it as a rehearsal, not a ritual. The spring feasts were fulfilled at the first coming because people had rehearsed them for centuries. The fall feasts rehearse the second. Rehearsal is preparation: repentance, watchfulness, getting your house in order.

• Sound the alarm in your own house. The trumpet's job was to warn and to gather. Teach your children that YAHUAH keeps a calendar and keeps His appointments.

• Stay ready, not scared. Psalm 89:15 — blessed is the people that know the joyful sound. For the remnant, the trumpet is not a threat. It is the announcement that the King is coming.

The trumpet has sounded through all of scripture — at Sinai when the mountain shook (Exodus 19:16), at Jericho when the walls fell (Joshua 6:20), in Zion as the alarm of the Day of YAHUAH (Joel 2:1). It will sound again, one final time, and the dead will rise.
